Project Case Study: Engineering to Eliminate the Bill

For this homeowner, fluctuating utility costs and steep winter heating bills were becoming a serious budget concern. By analyzing their Appalachian Power (APCO) Energy Advisor Report, we saw exactly what we were up against: their home consumed 10,753 kWh over the past 12 months, with winter bills spiking up to $183 in a single month. They needed a clean energy solution to take control of their monthly expenses.

Our Lynchburg solar team doesn't guess when it comes to system sizing; we use real data. We designed a highly efficient 5.22 kW DC system engineered specifically for their asphalt shingle roof's 21-degree pitch. To ensure a stress-free transition, we also handled all the complex administrative work, securing the official building permits and managing the utility interconnection process.‍

Key Upgrades & Materials

We pair advanced power conversion technology with the most reliable roof-mounting hardware in the industry to ensure your system performs safely for decades.‍The specifications for this custom system included:

  • High-Efficiency Solar Panels: We installed a targeted array of 12 Hyundai 435W (HIN-T435NF) Solar Modules. These sleek, all-black panels provide excellent power density, allowing us to generate over 5 kilowatts of power with a highly compact footprint.
  • Advanced Microinverters: Each of the 12 panels was paired with a dedicated Enphase IQ8M-72-M-US Microinverter. This decentralized approach converts DC to AC power directly at the roof level, pushing a steady 3.90 kW of usable AC power to the home and ensuring that shade on one panel never impacts the others.
  • Leak-Proof Shingle Mounting: We secured the array to the home's 2x4 rafters using the UNIRAC NXT UMOUNT system with STRONGHOLD Butyl. This advanced, flashless mounting system uses a peel-and-stick butyl pad that conforms to the lag screws and roof deck, creating a robust, watertight seal without the need to pry up and damage the existing asphalt shingles.
  • Smart System Management: The system is integrated through an Enphase IQ Combiner 4/4C, which allows the homeowner to monitor their system's production and track their APCO bill offset right from their smartphone.

The "Flashless" Mounting Advantage

Traditional solar installations require installers to pry up your asphalt shingles to slide metal flashing underneath, which often leads to broken shingles and future leaks. By utilizing UNIRAC's Stronghold Butyl system, our crews can bolt the racking directly through the roof deck and into the structural rafters with a self-sealing chemical bond. This keeps your roof fully intact and completely watertight.‍
