Project Case Study: Offsetting High Utility Bills

For many homeowners, the decision to go solar starts with a frustrating utility bill. In this project case study, the homeowner was facing monthly electric charges upwards of $185 , with an average daily usage of 34 kWh through Dominion Energy. They wanted a long-term solution to offset these rising energy costs.

Our Culpeper solar team designed a robust 7.83 kW DC solar array tailored specifically to their roof's dimensions and energy consumption. But designing the system is only half the battle. We handled the entire backend process—from securing wet-stamped structural engineering certifications to obtaining Net Metering approval directly from the utility company. This turnkey approach ensures a stress-free transition to renewable energy.‍

Key Upgrades & Materials

We utilize premium, high-efficiency equipment designed for maximum power density and leak-proof reliability.‍The specifications for this custom solar system included:

  • High-Efficiency Solar Panels: We installed an array of 18 Hyundai 435W (HIN-T435NF) Solar Modules. These premium N-Type TOPCon panels provide a sleek, all-black aesthetic while delivering exceptional power output even in high temperatures.
  • Advanced Microinverters: Each panel was paired with an Enphase IQ8M Microinverter. By converting DC to AC power at the panel level, the system maximizes total AC output (up to 5.85 kW) and ensures that if one panel is shaded, the rest of the array continues operating at peak capacity.
  • Leak-Proof Mounting: We secured the array to the home's rafters using the UNIRAC NXT UMOUNT system with Stronghold Butyl. This advanced, flashless mounting system uses a peel-and-stick butyl pad that creates a robust, watertight seal without the need to pry up and damage existing shingles.
  • Smart System Management: We integrated the system using an Enphase IQ Combiner 5/5C, providing the homeowner with real-time, panel-level consumption and production monitoring.

Handling the "Red Tape" & Net Metering

Going solar involves strict building codes and utility regulations. We manage it all for you. For this project, our in-house process included passing a rigorous Structural Engineering review to ensure the roof could safely withstand 115 mph winds. Furthermore, we successfully processed the Interconnection Application with Dominion Energy, securing Contingent Approval for Net Metering so the homeowner receives billing credits for the excess electricity they push back to the grid.‍
