Project Case Study: The Perfect Roof & Solar Combo

One of the biggest mistakes a homeowner can make is installing a brand-new solar system on an aging roof. In this recent case study, a homeowner wanted to offset their Appalachian Power (APCO) bill—which averaged around 579 kWh of usage per month —but their existing shingles were reaching the end of their lifespan.

Because we are uniquely equipped to handle both the roof and the solar, we provided a seamless, turnkey solution. First, our roofing division completed a full asphalt shingle roof replacement, ensuring a pristine, watertight foundation. Immediately after, our solar division stepped in to engineer and install a highly efficient 5.655 kW DC solar array. By keeping both projects under one roof, the homeowner guaranteed that their new roof warranty remained 100% intact.‍

Key Upgrades & Materials

We utilize premium equipment designed for maximum efficiency and leak-proof reliability.‍The specifications for this custom solar system included:

  • High-Efficiency Solar Panels: We designed an array using 13 Hyundai 435W Solar Modules. These all-black panels provide a sleek, modern aesthetic against the new shingles while delivering exceptional power output.
  • Advanced Microinverters: Each Hyundai panel was paired with an Enphase IQ8M Microinverter. This allows each of the 13 panels to operate independently, maximizing the system's total AC output to 4.225 kW.
  • Leak-Proof Mounting: We secured the array to the home's 2x4 rafters using the UNIRAC NXT UMOUNT system with Stronghold Butyl. This advanced, flashless mounting system uses a peel-and-stick butyl pad that conforms to the screws and roof deck, creating a robust, watertight seal without the need to disturb the brand-new shingles.
  • Smart System Management: We integrated the system using an Enphase IQ Combiner 4/4C, which provides the homeowner with real-time, panel-level consumption and production monitoring via their smartphone.

We Handle the "Red Tape"

Going solar involves a lot of behind-the-scenes paperwork. Our Wytheville team manages the entire process from start to finish. For this project, our in-house process included securing wet-stamped Structural Engineering Certifications to ensure the roof could handle the wind and dead loads , obtaining local building and electrical permits , and successfully processing the Interconnection Application with Appalachian Power so the system could legally push power back to the grid.‍
